Audio-Technica ATH-AD2000 Headset Review

Air Dynamic Headphones

  • Warm, crisp audio
  • Rich, earthy bass
  • Comfortable and dependable ear cups

  • Head strap can be uncomfortable for some
  • Midrange audio is sketchy
  • Larger ears might have a tighter fit

If the Audio-Technica ATH-AD2000 headphones were just a bit cheaper, they'd easily earn the fifth star. But the high price coupled with a not-perfect audio experience only makes these headphones very good instead of perfect. But, if you can spare the money, you certainly won't be disappointed; you just won't be blown away.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD2000

The first thing most people notice about the ATH-AD2000 is its price. Clocking in at over eight hundred bucks, this is definitely not a headset for casual audio fans. But Audio-Technica isn't trying to increase its fan base with these headphones; they're trying to maintain their reputation of offering superior sound for superior audiophiles.

So how does the headset rank, then? Well, for one, the integrated bass output is one of the most impressive we've seen in quite some time. Most competing headphones have a bass boost that comes off as a bit unnatural at the best of times and annoying at the worst of times. Not so with the ATH-AD2000. The crisp treble is also very impressive and one can listen to a wide variety of music styles with almost no drop in quality. The mids do get a little muddled sometimes, though, and if you don't listen to loud rock or pop you might feel a bit cheated.

As for comfort, the ear cups are absolutely lovely. The velour inner cup is surrounded by a rather plush leather. The headband is a bit tight, though, and it seems like it may have been made for the smaller Japanese head (Audio-Technica is a Japanese company). But these problems only arise if your head is a bit larger than average. Also, those with big ears might notice a tight fit with the ear cups. Still, these minor gripes pale in comparison to the stellar sound that comes from these babies. This is where the company can really show off its specialty and, though the price is a bit high, you will definitely notice a superior level of bass variance as well as a wonderfully complex tone.
