On June 19, 2007, Sony Ericsson publically announced its plans to expand its business across the globe to India. The company will build a mobile phone research and development division in Chennai, India, which will be led by the former Sweden-based Anders Grynge. The Sony Ericsson global network already includes divisions in the Netherlands, Sweden, China, Japan, the UK, and the US.
This announcement coincides with the one given in January which publicized plans to manufacture ten million phones by 2009 in India. Sony Ericsson states that these moves are intended to benefit the company and to help reach their goal of becoming one of the top three companies in the global handset industry.
The Indian mobile phone market is said to have doubled last year alone, selling tens of millions of handsets. Data experts expect this pattern of growth to continue. The company anticipates that in the future, Sony Ericsson products will be sold on a larger scale as a result of investing in India.
